Food, Nutrition, & Dietetics

Food:  Material, usually of plant or animal origin, that contains or consists of essential body nutrients, such as carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, or minerals, and is ingested and assimilated by an organism to produce energy, stimulate growth, and maintain life.1

Nutrition:  The science of food, the nutrients and other substances therein, their action, interaction, and balance in relation to health and disease and the processes by which the organism ingests, digests, absorbs, transports, utilizes and excretes food substances.2

Dietetics:  The science of incorporating the principles of food and nutrition with the art of planning and preparing foods, delivering nutrition education and services, and/or developing programs aimed at promoting health or treating disease.3
