Nursing 420 – Implementation of the Professional Role

Skill Demonstration - Section A1 -

Students in N 420 Section A1 Preceptorship Leadership & Management will complete the skill demonstration on Tuesday August 19, 2008 or Wednesday August  20, 2008.

 

PRACTICE TIMES – Talk with Ms. Chandler about practice time in August.

You will schedule practice for one hour only –

You will have approximately 45 – 50 minutes to demonstrate all of the following skills during the actual demonstration.  If you cannot complete these skills during this time, you will be STOPPED AND WILL have to reschedule another time to do so. 

Students will not be allowed to remain longer the 50 minutes and take another student’s appointment time.

 

THE MSU SKILL BAG CONTAINS ALL EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES – IIN ORDER TO COMPLETE THE DEMONSTRATION ACCORDING TO THE Taylor textbook.  

Bring your stethoscope and dress appropriately for the assignment.

 

Preparation / Instruction sheet will be given at the beginning of the demonstration. You will be expected to interact with the mannequin as in an actual patient situation.  You will be given information about the patient, a physician order sheet to follow and a nurses note to document your procedures and care given.  You are expected to know the patient education and safety instructions that are within the procedures here. You will begin with a brief head – to toe assessment of the patient based on the information sheet you will be given at the time of the demonstration.  You will be expected to administer IVP medications, IM medications and initiate an IV.  Documentation is due to the faculty mentor by 4 pm on the day the demonstration is done unless otherwise instructed.

 

Demonstration of safety in medication administration.

Demonstration of IV therapy, including IV initiation. central line care and  IVP medication administration,

Airway management -  tracheal suctioning 

NG tube insertion – and removal.

Wound Care – wet – to – dry – dressings

Physical assessment – head – to - toe

Central Line dressing change

 

The Learning Resource Center [LRC] is open year around Monday through Friday for student use.  Media used in N. 420 is in the LRC.

Students are required to view the following tapes and summarize the content on an index card.  The cards will be submitted to the instructor prior to beginning the actual demonstration. 

8038 is preparing a Sterile Field     8040 is Wound Care;   8041 is NG Tube insertion

8039 is Sterile Gloving; 8043 is NG Tube removal; 8044 is Tracheal suctioning

8046 is Central Line Care
